Why can't a laptop ac adaptor be plugged from the laptop to the wall outlet? what is the little box for?

I am wondering what the small box is that is to say the central part connecting from the wall outlet on one end, and to the laptop ac addressee on the other.

Why can't a laptop ac adaptor be plugged from the laptop to the wall outlet? what is the little box for?

The little black box you speak of is a transformer which takes AC (alternating current) from your electric service and transforms it into DC (direct current) which your computer wishes to run. An external transformer is required because it would increase the size of the laptop if it were to be installed in the case. Desktop computers enjoy their transformers inside the case because near is room for them.
it drops the power down from 240v to around 20v (my laptop) other wise it would blow everything within your pc..your desktop workstation has this built inside it ( its a huge box) call a psu (power supply unit)
The box is a Converter that converts AC to DC, and reduces the Voltage.
The little black box converts the AC current which regular appliances use into DC current that the battery on your laptop uses.
