Why can't i increase the resolution on my linux system?

You need to install the drivers for your graphics card. Go to the website of the company that made your graphics card and you'll find them nearby if they exist. If not, just furrow on Google for them. Considering Linux however, installing may not be easy...
You must install the hottest drivers for your video card and configure the xorg.conf file afterwards. What Linux Distribution are you using?
Try this google explore, there may be something near for your problem:

It would be worth registering with one of the forums and asking like peas in a pod question, trade name sure you give the details of your graphics card, the distro you are using etc.

run to: http://www.justlinux.com/forum
Just for farts and giggles, try pressing the knob combination of Ctrl - Alt - Numerical Key Pad +. This will cycle through the resolutions configured in /etc/X11/xorg.conf or /etc/X11/XFree86.conf. If you see a switch in resolutions while you are pressing the knob combination, you will need to set your config database to the resolution you like.
Makes sure your display settings are correct. Video card and monitor.
